An open letter to the late Mr. James Randi (8/7/1928 - 10/20/2020)

Known professionally as the Amazing Randi, he dedicated his life to exposing seers who did not see, healers who did not heal, and many others. What roiled his blood, and was the driving impetus of his existence, Mr. Randi often said, was pseudoscience, in all its immoral irrationality.

“People who are stealing money from the public, cheating them and misinforming them — that’s the kind of thing that I’ve been fighting all my life,” he said in the 2014 documentary.

The One Million Dollar Paranormal Challenge was an offer by the James Randi Educational Foundation (JREF) to pay out one million U.S. dollars to anyone who could demonstrate a supernatural or paranormal ability under agreed-upon scientific testing criteria. A version of the challenge was first issued in 1964. Over a thousand people applied to take it, but none were successful. The challenge was terminated in 2015.

Well, well...Mr. Randi … I happened to read the above article only yesterday as I was doing some research for the next lesson I am putting together. We seem to have missed encountering each other, your challenge terminated in 2015, I decided to come forward into the Occult circles and start putting pen to paper later on that year. Until yesterday I had no idea who you were as I am sure during your lifetime, you of me.

I was amused and bemused at the audacious challenge you had put there, but I was also understanding of why no one had ever claimed the price. You set out to expose the charlatans inside the Occult World, something that I endorse entirely, something that is close to my heart too, but let us not be mistaken, that money would have been mine had I wanted to, like taking candy off a child. Of course, this could have never happened, because you would have wanted to scrutinize the methodology behind what would have just happened,, and that, my friend, is worth more than the million dollars you were offering.

Besides you knew damn well, that any self-respecting occultist of a certain caliber would have never come forward. Why? Because firstly we are not motivated by money and earthly possessions, what interests us you could never in your wildest dreams have offered and secondly, many of us are tied to oaths as to not revealing certain facets of our workings.

Having said that, I have performed feats of magick that have been witnessed by the normal Joe Bloggs out there, what were you going to do? Just hand me over the money on eye witness accounts? Guess not … and who would blame you… and yet you could neither discount that which I had performed. What a catch 22 situation… What a parody …what a dilemma.

Guess it was fated we never met, guess you are now in the right place to determine whether magick exists or not… hope you have found your answers, hope you shall also rest in peace. Pssst .. by the way, Mr. Randi, rest assured that my magick is only too real … a million dollars real!
